Program decription

Paediatric ultrasound as a subspecialty requires years of practice because of the need to detail minute anatomical variations on moving targets in order to rule out high risk diagnoses in a precious population! Fortunately, most clinicians working with children are interested in using ultrasound for specific basic purposes (fast-tracking, diagnostic streaming, or procedural support). This course will teach the principles of POCUS in the paediatric population and outline areas where POCUS assessments can help with procedures or guide bedside diagnostic evaluation, as well as helping the clinician to recognise where more detailed evaluation  is necessary.

The five-day program will focus on these aspects while providing an overview or more comprehensive uses of ultrasound, thus: Basic principles of knobology & practical system orientation

  • Peripheral vessel recognition & nerve scanning techniques
  • Ultrasound needle guidance techniques
  • eFAST scanning techniques, and blunt abdominal trauma overview
  • Paediatric GIT:  rectal diameter and bowel motility,  Overview of yloric stenosis, intussuception, appendicitis, ovarian torsion, and the challenges of these assessments
  • Renal and bladder assessments and their value in the young febrile patient with UTI
  • Lung pathology: effusions, drainage guidance, and the sonographic appearance of pneumonia and pulmonary oedema

Basic echo in life support, sonographic flags for paediatric cardiac pathology, role of POCUS in the shocked  patient. There is ample opportunity for small-group practical tuition sessions conducted by our expert faculty.

The aim of the program is for registrants to gain scanning skills sufficient to make sound clinical decisions, to recognise the strengths and limitations of point-of-care ultrasound, and to know how to integrate basic ultrasound into clinical decision-making .

Electronic logbook services with expert feedback

To help maintain & improve your skills we offer an online ultrasound mentoring service so that our experienced staff can guide your hand by giving critical feedback on your uploaded images. The logged cases can then be saved on the AIU site to be used as a personal electronic logbook for future credentialing purposes.
