Program description

This three-day course has been specifically designed for ED Nurse Practitioners who would like to become proficient in some basic concepts of ultrasound scanning at the bedside.

Specific topics include


  • Basic practical physics, "knobology" and artifacts
  • Probe manipulation techniques
  • Scanning protocols in:
    • eFAST (trauma)
    • Basic Soft Tissue Techniques
    • Early Pregnancy Assessment
    • Ultrasound Needle Guidance Techniques

Course objectives

  • To provide an overview of the physical principles and artifacts associated with ultrasound in emergency medicine
  • To provide scanning skills required in maximising diagnostic ability
  • To provide an understanding of the protocols required in answering common clinical questions

Extended Focussed Abdominal Scan for Trauma (E-FAST)

Basic Early Pregnancy Assessment

Vascular Access

CPD 16.5 hours (Lecture 6 hrs, Practical 10.5 hrs)

Electronic logbook services with expert feedback 

To help maintain & improve your skills we offer an online ultrasound mentoring service so that our experienced staff can guide your hand by giving critical feedback on your uploaded images. The logged cases can then be saved on the AIU site to be used as a personal electronic logbook for future credentialing purposes.
